I've been a busy bee restocking some sold items in both my handmade and vintage shops. I even sold a few small things by consignment in NYC. It won't break the bank, but it does provide positive feedback and encouragement in our bleak economy.

And, heartfelt thanks to those who have featured my purses in treasuries - you're the best!

I thought I'd share a few of my newest handmade items. I love working with fall colors, so I'm including my first 3 autumn inspired purses for this season.

I also have more fabric flowers in the making for the holiday season. Oh, would that I could stay holed up all day like an elf in my workshop, but alas, there are other details of daily life that need tending...

I've been so busy I haven't showcased any of my new listings from either shop, so here's is a bit about the rug - one of many I'll be listing from a fabulous estate collection.

These rugs were made and kept by a lady from Virginia and southern Maryland, and who lived to the age of 100 years old! Her grand-daughter-in-law has shared that she stopped making them in the 60's, so most will be antiques. I believe this one was probably made in the 1940's or early 1950's. Gently used, if at all, and now freshly washed and sparkling clean and sweet smelling. There are no odors, stains, catches, tears, holes, and so forth.

I'm just as passionate about antiques as I am of creating! Antiquing is what I did in New York before moving south, and I've been fortunate to have crossed paths with a few antiques in my new locale. This time, instead of colleciting, I'm having fun sharing!

Other than what's been featured in treasuries, I don't think I've showcased a lot of my new vintage clothing items lately. I've added some glassware, and will be listing some estate antique rag rugs in the near future.

Since we still have a lot of summer to go, there is still time to purchase this linen outfit that's perfect for summer occasions. I was so surprised to find a note in my mailbox on this typically quiet holiday. It was from a very kind Etsy seller, trinitydj, letting me know that one of my fabric flowers, (above), was in her treasury.

Sorry I've been so quiet - I've been working hard in both my shops, and have even had some sales!

Fun with Flowers. July 4th fun?!

From last Thursday and into the weekend, I produced oodles of fabric flowers! It took me the bulk of Sunday to photograph and edit them, but I had such fun with the whole process!

I created a few with the upcoming American July 4th holiday in mind - in colors of red, white and blue. I've posted these these festive cuties in my shop, and will be adding more in the days to come.

This one is red and blue - all you have to do is add the white, and you're set to go!

The beads in this small patriotic sweetie are mildly suggestive of "stars and stripes".

Here are all the things you can do with fabric flowers.

Patriotic and classy Fourth of July colors of red and blue -just pin or sew on white clothing or other accessory, and you're good to go!

Here are a few things you can do with fabric flowers:

*As hair ornaments/fascinators, headbands, attach to combs, clips, clips, scrunchies, etc.
*As a brooch for clothing
*Decorate hats, purses, totes, and other accessories
*Home decor - sew onto pillows or use as accessorizing focal points
*Children and baby's clothing, headwear, etc.
*Doll clothing
*Sew one or more onto your favorite fabric for a pretty necklace
*Use a single flower or as many as you like for making a corsages or wristlets
*Bridal or prom garters
*Decorate your car, office, and so forth
*Holiday decor, decorations, ornaments, wreaths, etc.
*Pet jewelry, collars, clothing, etc.
*Gift giving
And, SO much more - the possibilities are endless!!

Many coordinate with my purses and other accessories, and I'm offering a complimentary flower as a free gift with the purchase of a coordinating purse or accessory.
All my flowers can be purchased "plain", or I will be happy to attach a brooch pin or a hair comb free of charge. If someone wants a special or particular type of hair clip, I'll be happy to do so, with a slight increase in cost.

After you've done that, you must stroll through Donna's Etsy shop that's packed full of whimiscal but extremely well done fiber artwork that even includes jewelry!

Donna has been doing fiber work for years, and she designs and draws all of her own patterns. She's a true artist in every sense of the word!

There is so much joy in Donna's shop that you can't help but love each and every one of her creations. It's absolutely impossible to leave without a smile on your face!

I just love the faces on her Fairies and Divas, some of which are pins, and others dolls and miniature sculpture. I adore this jewelry diva - doesn't she epitomize so many of us who are still little girls, (inside), who like to play dress-up in our everyday lives?!

At first glance, I wondered where Donna gets her porcelain doll faces. Then I discovered that she hand paints each and every one on silk!! In savoring them, I see traces of celebrity, (and sometimes familiar everyday faces we see in friends and strangers), in many of them! For me, this is part of their appeal.

On top of the wonderful sculpure work Donna does, she also works miracles with fiber when it comes to making jewelry. Donna makes fiber necklaces and earrings, and I've never seen anything like these earrings. Take a close look - the colorful "beads" are actually knitted or needleworked fiber/yarn!!! Just incredible...

The High Plains Knitter shops

I hope all my American followers had an enjoyable extended weekend and a safe and happy Memorial Day?

In exploring handmade shops, I realize more than ever that there's no end to the talent out there. So, with that, I'm happy to share another artisan who works magic with yarn. Dianne, of TheHighPlainsKnitter's 1000markets and Etsy shops, spins interesting, and colorful yarn into intricate, textured, and beautiful lace, some of which reminds me of Ange'ls wings!

I realize I'm showcasing knit and crochet works, lately, but I want to illustrate how versitile this needle art is, and that not every piece of crochet is for winter wear! Like Kanokwalee, the end result is a light and airy piece, but because of the very different yarns used, the effect is entirely different. Both are entirely beautiful and fascinating in different ways!

I love the yarns that Dianne uses - they are similar to the yarns that I've used in some of my work, and some look quite familiar. And, as she has, I've found that many of these yarns are no longer available, making these pieces increasingly rare and hard to find.

My Gladraggz shop was in two treasuries the last few days! First I'd like to thank blythehopesvintage for including my silk ribbon embroidery bag in her gorgeous Etsy treasury, which now appears to have become "Tuesday Trends" You can see it here:

This silk bag seems to be a favorite, and has a lot of hearts. For those of you who are among its admirers, please note that it comes with a free quilted storage bag.

Although my bag isn't true ribbon embroidery, it has the appearance of this fine neede art. Ribbon embroidery tradtionally is done with fine silk ribbon, because no other material dyes so well or achieves the fine drape that silk does. Stitching with silk creates the feminine and elegant look, and as far as I know, it's impossible to achieve the look of ribbon embroidery by machine. Whenever you see it, you know that someone has worked long and hard for that little bit of Heaven!

New Purse and treasury

I've been working hard to get a package ready for consignment, and am behind in posting - apologies.

In addition to making things for B&M shops, I've also made a recent addition to my one line shops. This is the latest purse - another summer "watermelon" cooler. Within 24 hours of listing, it made this lovely treaury!

Here's another "Sunset" purse, this time, a simple all-around hoby style purse that's good for anything summer.

*Embellished by a band of classy jumbo lime green rick rack.

*Inside is lined in hot pink polyester shantung, and has 2 pockets, (one divided), and a pen/pencil slot.

*The bag top closes with a zipper.

*Size - 11" tall, (28 cm), 12" wide at top, (30.5cm), 3 3/4" deep. (9.5 cm).

The adjustable handle has a swivel hook. Handle is 1 1/4" (3cm) wide, and the length extends from 23" short to 46" long, (including tabs & hardware). (58.5-*117cm).

Here's another of my summer handbags sewn with Tina Givens fabric. This large, roomy, handmade pocket purse has it all, and is sure to be noticed!

*Sewn with 5 different fabrics, 4 of which are 100% high quality cotton fabric.

*Outer fabric on front/back has aqua scrolls on a marvelous pink background. Look closely and you'll see PEACOCKS worked into the scrollwork design.

Back view:

*Three inside pockets:
*1 large and roomy ZIPPERED pocket.
*3 envelope pockets (1 with a pen/pencil slot).

*Zipper closer for the main bag.
*Outer pocket is held closed with attached Velcro.

*Bottom is reinforced with plastic mesh to resist sagging.

*Handle is long enough to be worn as a shoulder or arm bag. Could be worn across-the-body on petite ladies.

*Bag size - 12" tall, (30.5 cm), 13" wide at top, (33cm), 4" deep. (10 cm).

*Handles stand ~ 13.25" (33.5cm) above the top of the purse.

As is the case with all my purses, the fabric used in this purse has been pre-washed. To clean this particular purse, spot clean or dry clean. Iron with cotton setting as needed.

I've fallen in love with designer Tina Givens' fabrics! Not only are her styles romantic and appealing, but her COLORS are so cheerful and bright!

This summer fabric collection is called "Olivia's Holiday". The colors are reminiscent of a holiday by the sea, and I'm equally inspired because they remind me of a beautiful sunset of multi colored pinks across a clear blue sky, and reflected against an emerald green sea.

My first bag in my "summer series" is this large messenger style bag sewn with 5 different fabrics. The outside front and back, is composed of a pink chandelier pattern over a sky blue background, as shown here:

And, the flap is a composed of pink and green fleur-de-lis motifs over a background of blue and green stripes.

The inside is lined in hot pink satin, as well as a third Tina Givens fabric.

There are three inside pockets - one large and roomy zippered pocket, and two envelope pockets - one in hot pink satin and the other in candy pink taffeta. Both are decorated with a band of fancy machine stitching across the top. Pens or pencils store inside the larger pocket, and keys store inside the smaller on a small attached swivel clip.

2 magnetic snaps are used - one for closing the main bag, and a smaller one for holding the flap securely closed.

The handle, made from two complimentary fabrics, is adjustable, allowing it to be worn as a shoulder purse, (across-the-body on petite ladies), as a shorter shoulder strap, an arm strap, and also as a waist purse, as shown.

I want to share more about my Penny's new collars, (previous post), which is really a fascinating story all by itself. So many times, even though a creation is handmade, we forget about the artist behind the necessary raw materials.

Jane Walker, artist and Greyhound lover, derives the most satisfaction in creating the basic materials for artisans to use in their own finished product. In this case, athough they're "basic", the materials are far from plain! As the former maker of glass eyes for miniature doll sculptors, Jane will always love seeing "her" eyes in the amazing tiny figures!

She's now moved from glass eyes to other mediums, including paper ornament kits, Greyhound and non Greyhound designed fabrics, cat, floral, mandala, bird, and other colorful artwork and photography.

All designs are availble through her website, where she has a very nice selection that includes non-greyhound themed designs. Just contact her and let her know what you want the design on (card, mug, fabric, clothing, etc).

Besides her printed collar material and other artwork, Jane is preparing the release of a new yard goods line. The new design collection, which consists of Greyhound geometrics designs, (seen here and at the very top), will be available as yardage, 5" quilting squares, and for those who don't sew, specially designed bandanas, handkerchiefs. Because she' not fond of sewing herself, Jane says that she looks forward to seeing what her customers will fashion from her fabric.

Jane's fabrics are printed-on-demand for her by Spoonflower, a tiny business with a huge client-base of artisans, located in South Carolina. She's excited by the fact that she has an available palette of 965 colors, which allows her to offer fabrics in virtually any color imaginable. All a customer has to do is send her samples of the colors they want, and she'll create a custom color for them!

In addition to the collar fabric, Jane's Etsy shop has non-greyhound fabric, and even kits for making pretty mandala designed Passover and Easter ornaments.

And, for Greyhound lovers who want to know, Jane proudly shares that her own 9 year young Greyhound, Greta, is the model used for her artwork silhouettes.

Happily, Greta is still as peppy and spry as she was when coming to Jane 6 years ago!

Hounds Closet - fabulous canine collars!

As you all know, I really love dogs - especially my Greyhounds. Every March, our GPA, (Greyhound Pets of America), has a weekend long celebration called the "Howlidays". Our family always attends the Sunday event, where there is food, lots of things for sale, games, raffles, and just the feeling of joy being surrounded by a sea of retired racing Greyhounds.

This year, among the goodies offered for raffle were 2 of the most gorgeous Martingale collars I've ever seen! Martingale collars are special collars designed to keep the dogs, (particularly sight hounds), from slipping out of his or her collar when on lead.

Greyhounds and sight hounds have thick, strong necks, wider than their long, streamlined heads, and without a special collar, they can wiggle free and be out of site in an instant. This photo shows how the collar looks as it's being worn:

Anyway, these collars were made by Jan, a very talented lady, and were raffled for a handsome sum. I managed to trace the collars to the HOUNDS CLOSET Etsy site, and promptly purchased two of these precious collars! Here are our Penny (and her former foster brother, "Charlie"), modeling Penny's newest additions to her wardrobe!

I found Jan's shop to be loaded with a lovely assortment of colorful and tasteful collars I've seen in a long time. She has a great eye for color and design when she chooses her fabrics. I especially like the fabric of these particular collars, which is made by a very talented artist, Jane Walker.

Here are just a few samples of what else is for sale - aren't they adorable?!

Greyhound updates - new foster, Charlie, and Penny

Our Blaze has gone to a new home, and as of Sunday we have a new foster, racing name "AHK Call me Dad". Now, neither "Dad", "Daddy", "Pops", or anything else for that matter is one that canine and humans and dog care for, so finally in frustration, we started calling him "Charlie". He seems to answer to it, and the name suits him.

The other night we were outside photographing a low flying blimp, and I was lucky to get some really nice photos of the dogs. The guy with the "black eyes" is Charlie, and the other, with the sweet face, is our Penny.

Penny is white with Brindle, and is actually "two dogs", with a large brindle patch on one side, and white with pretty ticking on the other. Before we got her, we saw a photo of her, (taken from one side), and thought she was mostly white. But, weren't we surprised to greet a dog with a huge brindle patch on her other side?! You can see a tiny bit of her large brindle patch, (on her right side), if you look closely at her front view photograph above).

Also, take a good look at that "sit" of Charlie's. Anatomically speaking, a Greyhound isn't built to sit. Their bone structure makes it mechanically impossible and painful to try to do so. Charlie is one of the few "hounds" who can come as close as possible to sitting.

Yummy new summer purse - "watermelon" colors of green and pink.

I'm happy to share my latest purse made up in awesome colors of neon green and hot pink.

The outside fabrics consist of fine quality batik prints aptly named "watermelon". I think this bag would make a cool and attractive summer accessory to any outfit!

I love the jumbo rick rack trim that's actually grosgrain ribbon. It goes all the way around the purse, and is anchored in the front by a pretty fabric flower.

This purse is not too large or too small, and quite efficient in its roominess.

The inside is done in a fabulous designer green cotton dotted with several shades of pink. There are 2 good sized open pockets, (one has double rows of decorative machine stitching).

A third pocket is very large and lined with candy pink taffeta. I've listened to what people want when purchasing a purse, so I've installed not one but 2 zippers in this one. The large inside pocket is zipped, and the purse closes with a recessed top zipper!

I've also attached pretty beads, (in the same pink and green colors as the fabric), and chains to serve as a handy zipper pull!

Greyhounds Mr. Blaze and Miss Vicky

The foster Greyhound turnover has been quicker than usual these days. By the time I was able to get a good photo of our foster, Blaze, he was scheduled for a transport north, where he's been requested by another Greyhound group.

For the last 2 months, we've had Blaze...

...and 3 weeks ago, an adorable little brindle girl, Vicky, (racing name Vicky Rumble), joined us. Vicky looks like a mini version of our dear former foster, Willie, but more feminine. With Blaze preparing to embark on his long journey, we are now down to 2 dogs - our Penny and Miss Vicky.

Blaze is a big, strapping big red fawn boy who is ALL boy...

...and sweet little Vicky - sweet, petite, and all girl! She reminds me of a little fawn with her doe-like eyes and her demure manner.

Blaze, on the other hand, is a very friendly, joyful, goofy guy, who can become so enthusiastic that he easily forgets himself and gets carried away. Even his ears seem out of control. Aren't they wild?!

Tomorrow Vicky will go to a Greyhound "Meet and Greet", to meet people who might be interested in adopting her. I kind of hope she's not too interesting and tempting, because as always, I want them to stay as long as possible!

The last of the peacock bags - "Pretty in Pink".

I've used up the last of my peacock fabric, saving the pink for last. I call these "Pretty in Pink".

As always, in striving for "One-Of-A-Kind", these pink bags are slightly different. Look closely at the pockets - the styles are different.

I've used green trim on one, and the other has no trim and a pocket flap and button.

Also, the linings are different, with pocket room in each.

And, notice that one has tied handles and the other doesn't.

I'm curious to know how you all feel about my handle treatments - do you prefer your handles "tied", or "loose"?

Penny the lounge lizzard?!

I just wanted to share one of my weekend projects - sewing new jammies for our Penny. Even though she has lived her whole life in the south, she seems to be a *cold* dog, shrinking from the first hint of any kind of chill. Greyhounds don't have a lot of extra body fat, (nor are they supposed to), and I guess Penny is a little more "lean" in this respect...

She already has one pair, but with cool temps still in the forecast, Penny needed her jammies that also were due for a spin in the wash. I really like to have an alternate pair, anyway, so seized the opportunity when I found a cute fleece remnant printed with all the things she loves - birds, butterflies, trees, flowers, and all things "nature".

Anyway, as soon as she slipped into her new outfit, her tail wagged and wagged with joy!! She'll wear jammies day and night until warmer weather arrives. It'll see funny seeing her "naked" with just her own gorgous fur coat!

I've been turning out purses and listing them quite frequently these days, and I'm having a ball!! A lot of work and time goes into each purse, and that doesn't include photographing, editing and posting them to my shops. But, in the end, the final reward comes when someone loves them enough make a purchase.

This cutie is a perfect bag for all seasons, but one that would be especially nice for spring and summer. And, it's so fresh and versatile that it can easily become be a staple of your everyday wardrobe.

The 100% linen fabric reminds me of the color of a sandy beach, and the color and pattern of the high quality cotton batik seem like ocean waves. Hence, I call this purse "Sand and Sea".

The inside is fun with it's Australian themed cotton print.

Although mid sized, the pockets make it seem large and efficient. Besides the large outside envelope pocket, there are 3 large interior pockets, and one is divided, making a total of 4 pockets inside.

There are 2 magnetic snaps installed in this purse - a large one for the purse itself, and a small snap that keeps the outside pocket closed.

Anyone who's been following my blog knows how much I adore Greyhounds - the racing kind - a truly noble breed born with awesome athletic prowess - dogs who can go from 0 to 45 miles per hour in 3 strides! Over the years, we have welcomed Racing Greyhounds, upon their retirement, into our home, either as "forevers", or as fosters between the track and their own forever homes. We consider their stay with us a sort of "finishing school", and are extremely blessed to have them for this short time that can last weeks or months.

I met Joanne, shopkeeper of Greydogz, in the Etsy forums, and immediately fell in love with her shop. If you love Greyhounds, Italian Greyhounds, cats, or animals in general, you'll love her Etsy and stained glass shops. I'm happy to share a few things from her shop that really drew me in:

I just love this sketching, done by Joanne, herself. The dog in this piece of artwork, (in particular, the eyes), bears a striking resemblance to one of my former fosters, Willie. While he was a good racer, Willie was an incredibly gentle dog, and actually was the most timid male foster we've ever had. So, please don't confuse the ultra focused look you might see in some Greyhounds' eyes with aggression. I commend Joanne for doing a superb job of capturing the true essence of many racing Greyhounds in this sketch!

Some sun for gray winter days!

I've been playing hard to replenish my shop inventory, and am turning out the last of my peacock purses. I have two more in the works, but here are my 2 most recent in sunny gold/yellow that will hopefully brighten up these grey days of winter. People have told me that these yellow bags remind them of sunny, fun Mexico, and I have to admit that they do!

While these purses seem to look identical, in sticking to my my practice of producing only one-of-a-kind items, I've created subtle differences between the bags.

Although the fabric is the same, if you look more closesly, you'll see that I've laid out the patterns in different areas of the geometric side panels. This produces a different design and color scheme.

Also, I've used different button embellishments on the outer pocket flaps - vintage amber toned buttons on one, and shiny, new AB coated on the other. Which one do you like better?

Winter jewel tones

For some reason, my winter items are viewed well and have earned hearts, but are starting to feel a bit left out as my other items leave the shop.

This is one of my many hats that is warm and soft, and the colors compliment and flatter any feminine face. If you love this hat, I also have a purse made with the same yummy fuchsia yarns.

The purse, as is the case with most of my crochet winter purses, is adorned with satin ribbbons and vintage brooches.

What a nice way to add a bit of color to the endless cold and gray days of winter.

Awesome and fabulous earrings!!

Shannon is a nice Etsy artist whom I met in the forums. Through her post there, I discovered these awesome earrings - all handmade by her!!

They are truly one of a kind, and everything is handmade by Shannon with the exception of the stone and crystal beads. The chain mail wire and other materials consist of Sterling Silver (he ear wires), and the links are titanium.

The description on the listing states that the earrings are extremely light weight and portable, (they collapse into a tiny disc when layed flat).

I am in awe of these earrings, and they remind me of a opulent chandelier. Maybe they're not supposed to, but I'm a fan of fine antiquities, so that's what they remind me of...

By now, most of you should know that purses of all kinds always send me! Lately I've been so fortunate to have found many creators of unique and beautiful purses - especially winter ones in which a great deal of time and effort have gone into their creation.

Sue, shopkeeper of the marblemaam Etsy store, has a unique assortment of games and fabric creations, but naturally, the wool purses are what caught my eye!

Her handmade purses are made with wool felt, are adorned with hundreds of different kinds of beads, and come in a variety of colors.

Each bead is hand sewn in a freeform pattern with nylon invisible thread, and the overall effect is simply awesome! Some purses even have various other types of beads, such as semi precious gemstones and rhinestones as part of their adornment,. The purses can also include decorative hand stitching/embroidery, too!

As you can see, each purse is unique, individual, and literally a work of art!

I love looking for new, fresh talent, and the purse selection on Etsy is no exception. I'm always delighted to find unique and artistic purses that I probably won't ever attempt on my own, but truly appreciate and love to showcase for others to admire. Of course I alwyas hope that the exposure brings notice to the shop, and hence sales!

Etsy shop, NaturalKnitsAndGems, is one of those shops that really caught my eye, and that I'd love to see garner some appreciative sales!

Kathy, the artist behind these lucious creations has been knitting since she was in 5th grade, having learned in Girl Scouts.

Catching up, our Greyhound fosters, Ludo etc., (and the trouble with computers...)

I've been trying desperately to post to my blog for weeks, but our family computers haven't been cooperating. My husband's new computer has Windows 7, and mine has Vista. We purchased them a few mere months apart, and I think 7 has many flaws... Since his computer is basically a toy, and mine a workhorse, I download photos to his and send them to mine. Let him use up space for something other than solitaire...!

Anyway, Windows 7 is so different that I can't seem to send photos from his to mine without major size problems (too small to do anything with). I've been slowly figuring things out, but have yet to post photos to my blog from any photos that are still on his PC. I supposed I could figure out how to post from his, but the problem still remains about how to solve the current problem.

In the meantime, I just realized that I have some photos on my PC that I can use for blog posts. Some of my followers know that we love Greyhounds, and have our forever Penny and usually one foster or another who is staying with us between the track and their "forever" home at any given time.

Ludo, (racing name C's Bagman), has been with us for 2 months, now. Anyone who is a Harry Potter fan will find meaning in his name. He's an extremely easy going boy who is faithful and loyal to the very end. His favorite phrase has been "Anything you want, dear". We learned that he's an "only child", the only pup in his litter, and all the attention never went to his head!

Ludo left us today, for the first leg of his journey that will take him north to the Chicago/Detroit area this weekend. In return, we came home with a red fawn boy, named "Blazin Rocket". We don't know if he's going to answer to "Blaze", "Rocket", "Rocky", or what? Time will tell about that, as well as what kind of a personality he has. So far, he's bright, curious, and loves squeaky toys.

I'll get a photo of Blazin Rocket soon, but in the meantime, here's our Ludo.

The Yarn Coture Shop - a beautiful evolution in progress!

I've known Maryum, from the Yarn Coture shop for some time now, and have always admired her work. I hadn't been to her shop for a while, so decided to stop in for a visit.

I was blown away by the work that she's produced, as well as the high caliber of it all! Part of the passion of creativity is that it's all a process of evolution, and it was clear to me that Maryum is truly evolving in her craft. I was so pleased to find a great blending of art, style and skill in her shops!!

It was difficult to pick just a few things from her shop to showcase, so I chose quite a few, including one creation made by Maryum's daughter. I highly commend her for teaching her children the creative process - something I feel we need to do more of with your young people, (when it comes to creativity)!

I just listed this really versitile scarf that's both attractive and warm! It's made with a textured black novelty yarn that's wooly, warm and shiny all at the same time. The overall effect and design results in a multi-textured, tone-on-tone effect with bling!

This scarf is really long, and can be worn in a variety of ways - casuual or elegant. It can be practical, and worn under or over a coat, tied, looped, around the neck or across one shoulder, draped down or across the body, or stole-like. Whichever way you decide to wear it, it can be fashioned as is, or dressed up with a scarf clip or large sparkly brooch for plenty of bling.

How to buy a fabric purse on line - Buying wisely. Guidelines for purchasing a fabric purse or handbag on line. Part 6 - last in a series.

The workmanship does't end with a purse's pretty trims, embellishments and extras - they count too...

*Embellishments:

A lot of people, (including myself), love the extra "pretties" that give handmade purses their charm and character. I use pretty hardware when I can and when it's appropriate, but I also love to use various kinds of trims in some of my bags, such as piping, metallic trims, and my fabric flowers.

While pretty, it's important that these trims and little extras are securely attached. With the exception of my romantic dress purses, most of my cotton purses are made for every day wear, and the trims are attached in such a way to assure they'll last for the life of the bag.

Many of you have seen my winter purses with the ribbons and vintage brooches. Not only are the ribbons tack stitched, (by hand), to the yarns, the brooches are tightly sewn by hand in several places, securing them to the yarns. They are going nowhere!! If, for any reason, an emellishment should come loose, all I ask is that you return the bag to me, and I'll reattach it - it's part of my guarantee!

With my crocheted purses, all I ask is that you treat the purses with care to safeguard the anitquity of the vintage brooches. By doing so, when the purse has finally seen its better days, you can clip the tacking threads and enjoy the brooch for years to come as an adornment for your clothing!!

My fabric flowers are machine stitched to the purse as well as multiple catches with needle and thread to secure the decorative button in place. All cording and piping trims are tightly bound, and my trims are securely attached with machine stitching. Care has also been taken to attach any trims as "seamlessly" as possible, encasing the ends, (where they meet), in the side seams as unobtrusively as possible.

Notice how the gold trim in this purse meets in the side seam in a way that's not obvious that it's a seam.

And, another of my signature themes is my inside pockets. Being a very frugal person, I love to fashion fun pockets made from the trimmed scraps of material from the purse exterior and lining fabrics.

You'lll see a variety of pocket treatments in my purses, ranging from decorative bands to geometric patchwork designs, including a sunburst pattern in one.

I often like to decorate pockets with decorative machine stitching in a theme that matches the overall mood of the purse.

All this piecing and sewing takes time, however fun it may be, and each pocket is truly one-of-a-kind, as are all my purses. No matter how pretty the outside of my purses may be, I want the inside to be a "silver lining" or "secret garden", so to speak, as an indulgence for the user of the purse!

One of my most popular purses, (and one with the most hearts), is my ribbon embroidered silk purse with beaded accents. The ribbon and beads have painstakingly all been sewn onto the purse by hand, and while this particular purse is not made to endure heavy duty wear and tear, with care, it certainly will maintain its grace and integrity for a lifetime of romantic evenings and outings, and then some!

One last signature items that I seem to be using in more and more of my purses are my tied shoulder straps. I find it terribly annoying to constantly wrestle trying to keep two shoulder straps in place - one is always fallling off, and I find it a terrible nuisance. While across the body wearing solves that problem, for some, it's not always practical. I found a solution that's not only practical, but stylish, and that's the knotted strap!! I haven't seen this treatment anywhere, and hope that the buyers of my purses finds this to be a handy solution to the falling strap problem! You'll notice that the purse in the very first photo illustrates my signature knotted strap technique.

Continued from part 4 - workmanship.

Above I wrote about reinforcing my purse bottoms with plastic mesh instead of cardboard. I would like to add that I take one more step to stabilize my bag bottoms, and that's wrapping the plastic mesh in a separate envelope of fabric and hand HAND stitching it to the bottom of the bag. The hand stitching assures that the plastic will not shift, and the fabric envelope cushions and protects the outer fabric. Even though I leave no sharp edges on the plastic, it's stiffer than the outer cotton fabric, and over time, the rubbing of the plastic against the cotton can weaken can and possibly wear a hole in the exterior fabric. I use upcycled synthetic fabric because the synthetic material is more resistant to wear than cotton, and also because it utilizes pre-used fabric. It's awkward to stitch that plastic "envelope" into the bag, but it assures that the reinforcement stays put!

*Lining: Is the lining interfaced, and does it fit closely against the bag like a "second skin"? Interfacing the lining gives it body and stability as well as keeping it in place - inside the bag, where it's supposed to be. I've seen a lot of linings that appear not to be interfaced, fit poorly, and are spilling out over the top of the bag. It's annoying to have the a flimsy and ill fitting lining come out every time you reach in for something. For me, it wouldn't take long get sick of and abandon such a purse.

Look closely and you'll see the row of topstitching along the top edge of the lining.

Also, does the lining appear to be stitched into place with topstitching around the top to hold the lining in place? Sometimes I finish the lining so that it's encased completely inside the bag and other times I bring the edge up and create a contrasting band around the top exterior. It all depends on what kind of a finished look I want. Either way, the lining is *always* secured to the bag exterior with a band of top stitching.

And, no matter what technique the seamstress has used, please check to be sure the side seams of the lining and outer bag are lined up. If the side seams of the lining and purse exterior do not line up fairly closely, you have a bag in which the lining is going one way and the outer fabric is going another. Again, this makes for a distorted purse. If the lining and outer materials are cut and sewn with precision, the seams should match fairly closely.

*Magnetic snap installation: This is a real bugaboo with me, and something that may seem incidental, but that I consider extremely important!!! I rarely if ever, see a magnetic snaps stitch reinforced on a handmade fabric bag sold on line - even the most expensive ones, and I'm sorry to say that it's a disappointment! On all my bags, you will see little squares of stitching around my snaps. This stitching is the last of 4 crucial steps in a well done magnetic snap installation, and this little square is proof and insurance that the snap is secured tightly to an extra piece of heavy duty interfacing behind the lining in such a way that it won't weaken or tear the lining fabric.

I sweat those snaps because they are tedious and time consuming, and one mistake and the lining is damaged or ruined. But, I assure you, my snaps are in there for the life of the bag and won't tear loose or strain the fabrics. When you don't see this type of installation on a fabric purse, you can be sure that the maker has cut corners for the sake of time. If you love your cloth purse and want to keep it for a long time, but don't see snaps installed with the reinforcing stitching, you run the risk that the stress on the snap will tear and strain the fabric, and eventually pull through the lining material, (even if interfaced).

Note the stitching around the snap as well as top stitching around the top edge of the lining.

*Workmanship: To me, this is the most important thing in a quality bag, and frankly, I don't see enough of it on line. Check out the stitching in the seams inside and out, pockets, handles, closures, panel "intersections", topstitching, and so forth. Is there double stitching in the stress points, in the handles and a row of stitching around the top of the bag? Are the pockets "tacked" at the top as I've illustrated here?

Some purse makers like to sew two seams on their pockets, and that is also a good sign that extra care has been taken in pocket installation. Pockets get a lot of wear and tear, and they need reinforcement at the pocket top to hold up against all that's going to go in and out of them. Whether or not they are double seamed or tacked is a matter of prsonal preference. For now, I like tacking, but have to admit that double stitching might be in my future.

Here are two examples of tacked pockets. The first is a single pocket in which the side seams are tacked at the top. Notice how the stitching at the top of the pocket forms a little triangle.

The second illustrates a divided pocket, (one wider piece of fabric, with a sewn divider to make two pockets from one piece of material.) Notice how the top is tacked in the shape of a triangle.

Seam intersections, especially in purses with quilted effects, should meet at perfect 90 degree angles. When you see this, it's not only a sign that the seamstress has taken extra care in piecing and sewing, but that the bag is shaped evenly.

Also, on purses with boxed bottoms, the intersection angles should be fairly close to 90 degrees, and as perfectly matched as possible. If they're not, you're going to have a bag that's distorted in shape. Notice how the side seam, (with the two rows of top stitching), matches up to the bottom seam of this purse.)

*Other materials used in the bag: Look for quality and sturdy zippers, snaps, clips, closures and hardware.

When reading the description of a fabric purse, also check to see what materials are used in the product. It's important to check out the other materials used in a bag that aren't visible but will tell the consumer about how the bag has been constructed. I use fleece to face the outer material, and I face the lining fabric with interfacing. Not only does the fleece provide softness, it also stabilizes the bag and gives it body. The same is true of the lining. My bags, while soft to the touch, will stand on their own, and aren't flimsy. In my opinion, it's well worth the extra time and money to purchase, cut and apply interfacing and fleece, because you have a more substantial bag in the end.

Also, some purse makers use cardboard to reinforce their bag bottoms. Not only does cardboard loose it's shape quickly, (once it's bent, it stays that way). And, it's not good once water hits it. No matter how washable a fabric is, I wouldn't recommend washing a purse that has a cardboard bottom because the cardboard just will not hold up. I use plastic mesh for my bag bottoms - sag resistant, perfectly washable and practically indestructible.

And, I take one more step to stabilize my bag bottom, and that's means wrapping the plastic mesh in a separate envelope of fabric and hand HAND stitching it to the bottom of the bag. Continued - what to look for when buying a fabric purse on line. Part 2 - Materials.

*Fabric/Material: Check to be sure that the fabric has an attractive design that is woven and printed well on the fabric. Is it aligned well and printed evenly accross and up and down, and is the pattern centered well on the bag to make the most of the design? On large scale prints, there will be more fabric wasted in getting a good "cut", so take that into consideration before making judgements about the final price.

If you are selecting a purse that will get a lot of day-to-day wear, it's better to choose one made with a tightly woven fabric that's strong and sturdy. A good example would be cotton batiks. I love batiks because of their designs, but they also have a high thread count and are very tightly woven, and that makes them more durable. Cotton, and cotton batiks are also easier to clean. While synthetics can be more durable, sometimes they tend to "pill" and hold stains, so this is also a consideration.

Also, check to see if the maker of cotton bag states swhether or not the fabric has been pre-washed? There are a couple of reasons for pre-washing fabric, the first being allergies. Most modern fabrics are treated with chemincal preservatives to protect them from insect and mold damage while in the warehouse and in transit. More and more people, (including myself), are developing nasty allergies to these chemicals, the effects of which can be minimized or eliminated by washing.

Secondly not only is cotton is washable, it's also "shrinkable" and sometimes the dyes are not color fast. I pre-wash all my fabrics, so if they are going to shrink, bleed colors, or change shape, they will have done so by the time the consumer needs to clean them. Most of my cotton purses are hand washable, and come with care instructions.

It's been said that you get what you pay for. I've been told by some that I charge too much for my purses - others find them competitively priced. Admittedly making a purchase on line carries a certain risk because there isn't the option of touching and holding the merchandise. With a few good photos and descriptions, and with a bit of knowledge, making on-line purchases can carry much less risk, surprise, and dissapointment.

The ordinary person understandably doesn't always know what to look for when buying a purse. While often pretty, unfortunately some purses just aren't made well enough to last for the long haul. Admittingly, my work is evolving, and my purses are better now than they were a year or two ago. And, while I can't compete with the gifted artisans who produce elegant tooled leather products, I do know a bit about what goes into a basic fabric handbag.

With designer handbags, there are things to look for when the price is too good to be true, (a great topic for another blog post about fraudulent designer copies), and the same holds true for handmade fabric bags. There are just some basic construction techniques that hold true, no matter who's made the product. Below is what to look for when buying a purse anywhere. I'm going to limit the examples to fabric purses, because what I know the most about and because you find a lot of fabric purses in electronic venues.
